This is largely because it’s one of the few areas of the plumbing system that’s easily visible. All you need to do is open the cabinet beneath the sink (unless you have exposed pipework), or you may even notice water dripping directly onto the floor. Drain leak
The drain is often the cause of a kitchen sink leak. Drains are usually sealed with plumber’s putty to prevent water from escaping. Over time, this putty can dry out, crack, or may have been applied too thinly in the first place. In some cases, the leak may be coming from an old or worn-out drain that is no longer fit for purpose. When this happens, it’s usually best to contact a plumber and have the drain replaced entirely.
Faucet leaking
Leaks from the faucet are often easy to spot. A common sign is water pooling at the top of the sink when the tap is turned on. Sometimes, however, a faucet can leak and allow water to run underneath the sink, meaning the problem is only noticeable when you look inside the cabinet. In many cases, faucet leaks are caused by worn washers or damaged gaskets, which can be replaced relatively easily. In more severe cases, the entire faucet may need replacing, which is still a straightforward repair.
Clogged P-trap
The P-trap is the curved section of pipe found underneath the sink. Its purpose is to prevent unpleasant odours from rising up through the drain. Because it’s usually hidden from view, leaks in the P-trap aren’t always immediately obvious. Over time, debris such as food particles and grease can build up inside the trap, restricting water flow and potentially causing leaks. Corrosion can also be a factor, particularly if your sink has metal components. If the P-trap is damaged or corroded, it may need to be replaced completely.
